" I've known Chuck Mathieu for over five years now and knew that he
played blues guitar but had never gone to hear him play until this past
Saturday. He and Russell Somers had an early gig at The Lighthouse in
Hermosa Beach, so my friend Beth and I drove up from Orange County to
hear them. The Lighthouse was pretty empty when we showed up around
4:30 p.m., but that didn't stop Chuck and Russell. Chuck introduced us
to the regulars in there, all of whom he knew by name. It's funny
because I used to go to the Lighthouse many moons ago with my then
Surfer Boy boyfriend. It hasn't changed all that much in 20 some odd
years."

"So we got comfortable with our drinks and some appetizers and let
ourselves be entertained by their funny stories and good music.
Chuck, who hails from Louisiana, sang of voodoo and other mysteries of
the Big Easy. Russell, a Texas native, impressed us with his guitar
playing and some songs he wrote for his wife. We especially enjoyed
"Red Flannel Pajamas" and a sweet love song whose name escapes me at
the moment. They also did some covers including "King of the Road",
"Love the One You're With, and a terrific medley of Sam Cook songs
including "You Send Me", (Darlin' you ooohhsend me, you oooh send me,
darlin' you ooooh send me, honest you do honest you do honest you do)
"Cupid" (cupid, draw back your bow, and let your arrow go straight to
my lover's heart for me....) and "Wonderful World" (Don't know much
about history, don't know much biology...) That made me want to sing
along and put tips in the musician's jar for which scored me some cool
Mardi Gras beads Chuck and Co. imported a while ago from Louisiana!"

"Chuck's wife, Annie, and their daughters and dates showed up later as
did some old high school buddies, neighbors and friends. These guys are
really good and I'd like to see more folks pop by The Lighthouse in the
future to see them. It's a great way to spend a couple happy hours on a
Saturday."
